Content Inventory

What is it?

A Content Inventory is a methodical review of a system’s content. It is a relatively straightforward process of clicking through your web site or system and recording what you find.

Who uses it?

Information Architects use it to perform a content analysis and decide whether or not the content on a system is organized correctly according to business and user requirements. A Content Inventory allows the IA to become deeply familiar with the system, gaining invaluable knowledge which aids in redesign efforts.

How It Works

Start at the home/main page and identify the major sections of your site or system. Explore each section and see what’s linked from it. For each page visited, record the information specified in the columns of an Excel spreadsheet tool. Follow every link and navigate as far as possible through the system or site, making sure to gather data about every possible page.
